| Morse – Morse
Back in 1995, when this album
was released, it was difficult to categorize the music Morse
had created. The job is no easier Eight years on. Its if
they took the key aspects of mid-nineties alternative music,
mercilessly chopped them up into little pieces with a machete
and threw them in a boiling pot of sulphuric acid. The result
was this harsh abrasive sonic soup.
Opening track ‘Maziacs’
is pure Electro Rock covered in a thick coating of ZX Spectrum
samples. ‘West’ borrows its sick serial killer
subject matter and growling vocals straight from the Death
Metal Camp, while the music is pure Industrial. ‘The
Human Animal’, a tribute to Anthropologist Desmond
Morris, and ‘Whatstandwell or Bust’ are the
bands valiant attempts at hardcore punk. While the final
track, ‘Maternity of Sleep’, is a mellow outro
that emphasizes the albums diverse meandering.
Morse are always full of surprises.
Their cover of Slayer’s ‘Skeletons of Society’
turns the song on its head replacing distorted guitars with
a slap bass and a brass section. ‘Extraction of Limbs
of Manipulation’, and ‘Satan Owns a Corner Shop’,
swap and change musical styles more often that a chameleon
changes colour. Morse are not a band that take themselves
too seriously as can be seen in the albums outlandish highlight
‘Posh Wank’, and the ridiculous ‘Hours
of Fun.’
What this album lacks in production
values, being recorded live with hardly any dubs over a
two day period, it makes up for in diversity, tenacity,
and sheer unadulterated black humour.
Interesting fact = This is the first time this album has
appeared on CD. The original, and now deleted, tape and
vinyl copies are collectors items.
