Oscar Wilde is the
thinking mans drinker. While the less educated marvel
at the drinking exploits of the likes of George Best,
Liam Gallagher, and Oliver Reed those with a passion
for the English language adore Wilde’s boozy
banter. He loved to combine heavy drinking with heavy
conversation and would drink and talk with anyone
who cared to listen. Wilde lived life to the full
enjoying the earthly pleasures of the flesh to the
full. Sadly the conservative society in which he lived
punished his homosexuality and Oscar was sentenced
to the maximum punishment of two years imprisonment
and hard labor at Reading Goal prison. Oscar’s
life was productive and pleasurable, but short. He
died of meningitis on November 30, 1900 and was buried
in Bagneux, his alleged last words whilst dying in
his hotel room: "This wallpaper is terrible -
one of us will have to go."
So a raise a glass of the Green Fairy
to Oscar Wilde for he is truly a Top Drunk!
