Douglas
Adams is most famous for the Hitch Hikers
Guide to the Galaxy. Originally a radio play it mutated
into a book, a television series, a computer game
and a popular series of bath towels. The book spawned
four sequels giving a unique new concept to the term
trilogy. Douglas claims he originally conceived of
the name for his comedy masterpiece while lying drunk
in a field in Innsbruck. More proof if any was needed
that alcohol stimulates the creative centres of the
brain.
Adams populated his fictional universe
with characters that liked a drink or two. Guide researcher
Ford Prefect was moved to tears by very few things
except Elvis and stiff drink while ex-galactic president
Zaphod Beeblebrox was the creator of the potent Pan
Galactic Gargle Blaster. The effects of this cocktail
are described as like having your brain smashed out
by a slice of lemon; wrapped around a large gold brick.
Douglas sadly passed from this earthly
realm in 2001 at the tender age of 49. His alcohol
inspired comic lunacy is still making generations
laugh across the globe and a Hitch Hiker movie is
apparently in the pipeline.
